COOL AS A
CUCUMBER
Dhaka hits its peak temperatures between 11am–3pm - and the city's most vulnerable residents have nowhere to go. Street vendors, children, elderly people, and outdoor workers spend hours in exposed public spaces with little protection from extreme heat or pollution. Air conditioning is simply out of reach for most. As temperatures rise, the city needs affordable, accessible cooling infrastructure.
Three solar-powered misting and cooling stations installed in Dhaka's most heat-exposed public spaces - near schools, hospitals, transport hubs, and informal settlements. Each station combines misting tech, shaded waiting areas, greenery, and public health messaging. An earlier prototype served 100+ people in just 6 hours.
With £4,500 this project will:
- Provide daily heat relief to hundreds of people during Dhaka's hottest months
- Create safer public spaces for children, elderly residents, and street vendors
- Improve local air quality through misting and micro-greening
- Prove a low-cost, renewable-energy model that can be scaled city-wide
BETTER LAKE
THAN EVER
Hatirjheel Lake's edges are neglected, polluted, and underused - waste dumping, soil degradation, and lost vegetation. At the same time, low-income families nearby face unstable livelihoods and young people lack employment pathways. A double challenge: people struggling to earn a living while valuable urban green spaces deteriorate.
20–30 local farmers and young people will establish agro-ecological farming along Hatirjheel's shores. Training, seeds, tools, and market connections provided. A farmer and youth stewardship group will manage the site long-term. Community demand already exists - land access secured, participants confirmed.
With £4,500 this project will:
- Improve income for 20–30 farmers and young people
- Benefit an additional 100–150 local residents through food production
- Restore neglected lake-edge land through sustainable farming
- Connect producers directly to local markets for long-term income
